Youth programs: Relocations within government following the 2007 federal election

In the 1990s, the Youth Bureau was moved from the old "DEETYA" portfolio to within the Department of Housing, Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FAHCSIA) by the Howard government.

As of 2008 the Youth Bureau is now once again located within the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).

Many functions and programs relevant to youth affairs as outlined below, have also moved in 2008 to DEEWR, but some are to stay within FaHCSIA.

The government website, The Source, issues a newsletter, 'Youth Bulletin' and its February 2008 edition reports that the move to the new DEEWR will "allow opportunities for a broad range of education, employment, family and community initiatives for young people to be brought together in one portfolio".
Youth programs that have moved to DEEWR include:

  • Mentor Marketplace
  • YouthLinx
  • Transition to Independent Living Allowance (TILA)
Initiatives that have moved to DEEWR include:
  • National Youth Week (NYW)
  • National Youth Affairs Research Scheme (NYARS)
  • Youth consultation
  • Research and analysis
Programs that are staying within FaHCSIA include:
  • Reconnect and Newly Arrived Youth Support Service (NAYSS)
  • National Illicit Drugs Strategy (NIDS)
  • Strengthening Families program
