A report just released by DrinkWise confirms what the parents of many young people already know: young people face ‘the risk of social exclusion if they don’t drink the way their peers are drinking’.
The 200-page report examines every aspect of young people’s drinking habits and preferences, but highlights the importance of alcohol in creating camaraderie within their social groups. The researchers stress that young people’s viewpoints regarding the risk and excess involved in drinking need to be fully understood before strategies can be devised to bring about harm reduction.
From ideal to reality: Cultural contradictions and young people’s drinking was commissioned by DrinkWise and funded by both Drinkwise and the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing. It has been researched and compiled by the National Centre for Education and Training on Addiction (NCETA) at Flinders University, and is the second part of a three-year national project into sociocultural influences on young people’s drinking.
The report can be downloaded from the DrinkWise website at the following web page: www.drinkwise.org.au/c/dw?a=da&did=1024287&pid=1290036897 About DrinkWise: www.drinkwise.org.au/c/dw?a=da&did=1018514
