Sexual health

Your sex health is a website about reproductive and sexual health. It delivers expert information on emotional, practical and relationship issues. In its section, True Stories, it allows visitors to explore real-life dilemmas. This combination of story and fact helps site visitors to see the impact of decisions about sexual and reproductive health. The site was developed and produced by a team of Australian researchers, writers, designers and programmers working with, and for, the University of Melbourne.

New factsheet on sexual behaviours.
This is a resource for parents, carers, teachers and youth workers who might be concerned about the sexual behaviour of some of the young people whom they seek to help. The factsheet uses a 'Traffic Lights' model for responding to sexual behaviours. The factsheets are available and can be ordered through the Family Planning Queensland website and cost $7 per packet of 20; it is also available online.

Sexual health text messaging service – sextxt™ is a service that provides education for 16- to 25-year-old Australians on the importance of safer sex and helps address the increasing incidence of sexually transmitted infection (STI) and HIV/AIDS in Australia. “The sextxt™ service offers advice that is relevant to both heterosexual and homosexual youth via mobile phone. By texting sexinfo to 19SEXTXT (19739898) users will receive a reply within seconds with 10 options for automated assistance on sexual health issues. The sextxt™ service costs 55 cents per SMS message and the initiative is a not-for-profit service. Launched in 2007 during National Youth Week by Marie Stopes International, a leading Australian sexual and reproductive healthcare organisation, the service also provides information and advice on issues relating specifically to chlamydia and HIV/AIDS.

What is this Hep C thing?
This is an interactive internet-based resource about Hepatitis C intended for secondary school students. It was developed in response to an awareness that large numbers of young Victorians exhibit a lack of knowledge about the Hepatitis C virus. The project is a partnership between the HIV, Hepatitis and STI Education and Resource Centre at The Alfred, the Hepatitis C Council of Victoria and the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society at Latrobe University.

The SexEdco website has a list of sexual health centres in major centres.

The Australian Secondary Students and Sexual Health National Survey has been carried out every 5 years since 1992.

Sexual Health and Family Planning Australia
SH&FPA is a national federation of eight independent state and territory sexual health and family planning organisations. It's also responsible for an international program which contributes to sexual and reproductive health in the Asia Pacific Region.

The Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health & Society is a collaborating centre to the National Centre in HIV Social Research and is affiliated with the University of Melbourne. Their reseach into same-sex attracted youth is outlined at: http://www.latrobe.edu.au/ssay/

The 'Young People and Relationships' Project is a University of Melbourne PhD research study which aims to inform sexuality education, and the prevention of sexual pressure and coercion in relationships.


HIV/AIDS - Australian organisations and programs

National Centre in HIV Social Research

This centre conducts research which describes and analyses the social understandings, meanings and practices of peoples, institutions and communities in relation to HIV, Hepatitis C and other communicable diseases. Their research is utilised to inform government and non-government organisations, other research institutions, health educators, other health care professionals and community members.

Locted within the Faculty of Health Sciences at La Trobe University, this centre is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge and applied skills in sexual health research and education locally, nationally and internationally. The centre also carries out research into same sex attracted youth.

YEAH (Youth Empowerment against HIV/AIDS

YEAH is a not-for-profit organisation promoting HIV/AIDS awareness to young people in Australia and New Zealand. YEAH operates without government funding and is staffed by volunteers, the aim of the organisation is to educate Australian youth about combating the spread of AIDS in our backyard, and to connect young Australians to this global issue. YEAH produces resources and study guides of interest to teachers, educators and youth themselves.

Family Planning Queensland

FPQ offers clinical, education and training services from metropolitan and regional locations in that state. FPQ, in collaboration with Queensland Health, offers training in the area of HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C and sexual health promotion with young people. This training can be customised to suit the needs of organisations and services accessed by young people. Training is also available as a self-directed learning package, based on their CD-Rom, 'HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C and sexual health promotion with young people' (rev.2006). FPQ has provided sexual and reproductive health services to the wider population of Queensland since its first clinic session in 1972. Other links:
