Federal Election Youth Poll (2007)
The environment, education, employment and housing were the issues that most concern young Australians in the lead-up to the federal election on 24 November 2007, according to the results of the Australian Democrats' Federal Election Youth Poll.
The poll, coordinated by Australian Democrats Senator Natasha Stott Despoja, surveyed the opinions of young South Australians aged 15 to 20 years. Results indicated that 54% of respondents are enrolled to vote (bearing in mind that only those aged 18 years and over are eligible to vote). The majority of those enrolled to vote (90.5%) said that they were first-time voters.
Most respondents (37%) said that they would vote for the Labor Party in the federal election, 17% said that they would vote for Liberal/Coalition parties, 13% said that they would vote for The Greens, 10% did not know who they would vote for, while the remainder said that they would vote for Family First, the Australian Democrats or other parties.
Close to one-quarter of respondents (22%) rated the environment and global warming as the issue of most concern to them, followed by education (15%), employment (14%), housing (12%), the situation in Iraq (9%), the economy (8%), industrial relations and the war on terror (7% respectively).

Family and friends were nominated by 29% of respondents as their most trusted sources of political information, followed by the media (23%), teachers (15%) and politicians (11%). Around 22% of respondents said that they did not trust any source to provide them with political information.
'Young people struggle to make their voices heard in the political arena, and the 2007 federal election campaign has been no exception,' said Senator Stott Despoja.
