Number of children admitted to care and protection, 2003–04

Senate inquiry report, Protecting vulnerable children: A national challenge, shows:

  • Number of children admitted to care and protection orders and arrangements across Australia in 2003–04 ranged from 2,938 in Queensland to 181 in the ACT.
  • Across Australia, the number of child protection notifications increased by more than 21,000 last year, rising from 198,355 in 2002–03 to 219,384 in 2003–04.
Re-current expenditure on child protection:
  • National average of $217 a child aged up to 17 years (varying from $296 in ACT to $131 in SA and $200 in Queensland).
