Internet child pornography, 2004

A nationwide police operation in late September 2004 resulted in charges against at least 191 people involving more than 2,000 separate alleged child sex offences.

The 'Operation Auxin' raids yeilded more than 2 million images of children ranging in age from two to 16. Those implicated include teachers, academics, church ministers, policy officers, doctors, public servants, child welfare officers and defence personnel. The operation resulted from information gained from a 2003 United States FBI child pornography taskforce that followed a credit card trail to a Russian mafia company trading under the name Regpay Ltd. The company supplied material to about 20 US websites which then onsold the material around the world.
